Main theoretical considerations, methodological strategies, and empirical results of a research project based on Swedish political attitude data are summarized. The goals of the research project were, first, to suggest basic dimensions relevant for descriptions of Swedish political attitudes and parties and, second, to judge the cognitive relevance of these dimensions for political party sympathy. Data were collected from attitude questionnaires answered by representatives of the five largest Swedish political parties (serving as subjects). Analyses and empirical tests were based on factor analytical and Euclidean distance approaches. Results indicate five “party‐politicized” dimensions and a strictly (alternative modified) hierarchical model is suggested as the most relevant reflection of cognitive structures and processes involved in political party sympathy.
