This article contributes to emerging discussion on ‘placing’ emotions and empathy in geographic research processes in ways that matter personally and politically. Based on reflections from a qualitative research project with young fathers in Valparaíso, Chile, and drawing from psychotherapeutic and social work literature as well as from within the discipline of geography, the article argues that exploring interpersonal emotional experiences such as empathy can help researchers to understand more about how issues of power, identity, difference and commonality operate in research relationships, and about the personal and wider political implications of these issues for researchers and participants.
