Summary This paper presents some initial reflections on the emergence of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, the significance of the appellation ‘world’ and the interpretation of ‘heritage’. The dichotomous definition of heritage has found decreasing support in practice and occasioned changes in the original Operational Guidelines for implementing the Convention .
