A computer‐based pattern recognition procedure has been applied to trace element data obtained from marble samples of different Mediterranean quarries. Nineteen elements, mostly hydromagmatic and rare earth elements were first determined by neutron activation analysis. These elemental concentrations are then used as the data for further multivariate analysis. The results indicate significant differences in chemical patterns of the marble sources.
