This note, the first of three contributions about Magnetic Dating, briefly reviews basic principles and emphasizes that a‘magnetic date’can never be more reliable than the archaeological or other chronology on which the magnetic reference curve is based; the continued collaboration of archaeologists in strengthening and extending the reference curve is invited. The second contribution — by M. R. Harold — reports an effect of which it is important to take cognizance when sampling kilns and will illustrate to archaeologists, mindful of their kilns, why sampling needs to be so comprehensive. The third contribution describes the Spinning Magnetometer that is used to measure the samples in the Laboratory: it is intended primarily for the scientific reader.
