X‐ ray fluorescence is now a well established method of analysis both in the laboratory and industry. The fact that the method is essentially nondestructive makes it particularly attractive for the analysis of archaeological and museum artifacts. This paper gives a short simplified description of the method and gives an indication of the type of problem which may be tackled. Due to certain fundamental characteristics of the technique it is not suitable for some projects which would seem at first sight to present no problems.
