This is the fifth and last special issue of ITOR devoted to papers presented at the 17th Triennial Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from July 11 to 15, 2005. In the same way as other papers have already appeared in regular issues (see the papers by Brazil et al. and Lau et al. that were published in Volume 14, Number 2), extended or revised versions of other papers based on presentations given at the conference will appear in future regular issues. The eight papers in this issue show the richness as well as the large variety of topics addressed in operations research. That is, operations research has truly become global: global with respect to its authors, global with respect to its application areas, and global with respect to its linkages to other fields.
