This is the third volume of the Special Issues of ITOR devoted to papers presented at the 17th Triennial Conference of the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, held in Honolulu, Hawaii from 11 to 15 July 2005. The cluster on data envelopment analysis (DEA) was one of the largest clusters at the Hawaii IFORS conference. The papers in this volume are among the more than 40 papers presented in Honolulu. These five papers (by authors from four countries on three continents) explore theoretical, algorithmic and modelling issues in DEA, its application and comparison with other approaches. The large number of presentations in the DEA cluster at the Hawaii IFORS conference and the number of submissions to these Special Issues attest to the wide-spread interest and vibrancy in this research field.
