. Soil clean‐up policies have been a major focus of environmental concern in the Federal Republic of Germany. With the unification of the two Germanies there is an increased need for these policies. The paper briefly describes the nature of the soil contamination problem, and the development of a soil clean‐up programme. Clean‐up policies are evaluated by comparison with practices in the USA.
