. A basic task of national soil survey organizations should be to monitor changes in soil properties. The objectives would be to establish which land‐use systems, on which soil types, are causing decline in fertility, and to keep track of the effects of pollution. Unless data are obtained at national level, attempts to monitor global soil changes cannot succeed.
