Abstract. Techniques for restoring mineral workings to agriculture, forestry or amenity uses are described. An integrated scheme of working and restoration is vital, taking account of the soil resources available, appropriate methods of soil handling (usually by earthscraper or dump‐truck and excavator) and a programme of aftercare including underdrainage. Changes in soil during storage are discussed. Some of the potential problems where the site is infilled with imported wastes are reviewed. The success of restoration can be judged by comparisons of soil properties, crop performance or the general acceptability of the restored site to the local residents.
