A practice‐based study of nine autorefractors was undertaken lo assess reliability and validity. Various statistical methods were used to test aspects of validity of the machines compared with one another. In routine optometric practice the autorefractor is shown lo be a useful complement to existing techniques, but there is a measurable difference in the performance of machines from different manufacturers, and even between two models from the same manufacturer.
