Recently a new method of residual stress measurement, TERSA, was described 1 and it was suggested that there was a contribution to the effects reported from the stress dependence of specific heat. In this paper, experimental and theoretical evidence is presented demonstrating that the magnitude of the change of specific heat with stress is too small to make a significant contribution to the change in temperature resulting from a stress increment applied to a laser irradiated object.
