A brittle lacquer mapping technique was used to study the effects of changes in aerofoil construction, GRP laminate configuration, and blade root design in the development of a GRP fan blade. Areas of localised bending of the shell and stress concentration in the root region were located. Potential areas for the nucleation of fatigue damage were highlighted.
