Over the last ten years the Department of Industry and its predecessors have sponsored four Industrial Technologies. A case is made out for a fifth based on the concept of producing a component which will do its job effectively by coordinating all the stages involved in its production. To do this a better supply of specialist information across subject boundaries is recommended. A close parallel is drawn with the development of Tribology as a subject.
