A simply fabricated inexpensive device is described which, when viewed between crossed polaroids, shows a mutually perpendicular set of isoclinics whose directions coincide with the axes of the polaroids. An outline is presented of the usefulness of his ‘isoclinic indicator’ in photoelastic work, particularly when isoclinic patterns are being photographed for analysis at a later time. The ease with which any error in the orientation of the polaroids can be detected from such photographs is demonstrated.
