External pressure tests were conducted on thin multi–bay cylindrical shells to investigate the significance of out‐of‐roundness in relation to elastic and collapse behaviour. Conclusions are drawn about the developing elastic deflection profiles of the shells during loading and suggestions are proposed for the prediction of the collapse mode and the collapse pressure.
