The requirements for measurement of crack initiation and propagation are discussed briefly with particular reference to situations of liquid environments where conventional methods are unsuitable. A technique based on measurement of stiffness has been developed to give continuous record of crack length and a knowledge of crack initiation from a fatigue crack propagation test. The data obtained for EN3A mild steel in air and various liquid environment are in agreement with published values.
