A description is given of an experimental technique for the measurement of thermal strains and deformations in a cast iron brake disc. An experimental rig was used to simulate the heat dissipated at the rubbing path during braking, and thermocouples and strain gauges indicated the temperatures and strains. A/though some non–linearity, thought to be due to the stress–strain characteristics of cast iron, was noted in the curves for measured strain, good agreement was found with the theoretical predictions for both strains and deformations.
