The general strain–displacement equations of Novozhilov have been simplified for the particular case of a shell of revolution. The simplified equations. with one exception, agree with those obtained by Klein. Each of the expressions has been investigated in an effort to attach physical significance to every term. The equations have finally been transformed from a local co–ordinate system to a global system. This latter form is ideally suited to numerical procedures.
