When measuring load by means of strain gauges attached to a structure it is not always obvious that the gauge position may be more sensitive to extraneous load components than had been assumed. This note describes a method of defining the orientation of the strain gauge in order to respond to the required load component, with minimum crosscoupling, as the principal strain direction changes.
