The paper describes a method of multiplying the basic frequency of a deformed grating by filtering in the Fourier plane of a lens. The moiré pattern is formed in the image plane of this lens by mechanical interference of a frequency‐multiplied enlarged image of the specimen grating with a reference grating. A theoretical description of the system is given and some experimental results are presented.
