The development of a narrow (0.015 in), long (1.48 in) foil strain gauge is described for sensitive measurement of average localised strains, for instance the average tangential strain along the circumference of a hole in a plate under uniaxial or equi‐biaxial tension. Good agreement between measured and analytical values has been obtained.
