The article shows how the innate qualities of the vibrating‐wire strain gauge: cheapness, long term stability and tolerance to electrical troubles make it particularly suitable for experiments in tunnels. A basic type of gauge is described and its working explained. Its application is then extended to use in concrete, wet situations, the use of large numbers of gauges and the measurement of bending. Finally, practical advice is given on the assembly and tuning of this kind of gauge.
