The principle of landscape ecology finds wide application in conservation of biodiversity in fragmented and Man altered landscapes. Protection of carefully chosen habitats, networked by appropriate corridors can considerably enhance local biodiversity, especially outside major protected areas. This paper discusses the landscape ecology approach to the conservation of birds in a south India hill district. By the protection of 5 of the 21 major habitats spread over 18 localities, 76% of the district's avifauna can be conserved and protected.
