Members of the Union are reminded that nearly all the books and many of the papers mentioned in this section are available for reference in the Alexander Library of the Edward Grey Institute, and the recordings in the Sub‐Dept. of Animal Behaviour, High Street, Madingley, Cambridge. In the case of books, only those sent for review by publishers receive mention, whereas the abstracts are selected from the whole of the periodical literature. The abstracts are prepared by a panel of contributors organized by Dr. C. M. Perrins and Mrs. H. M. Whittaker, of the Edward Grey Institute. In making the selection, the aim is to pay particular attention to those papers that are of greater biological significance, and also to those in obscure or inaccessible journals. Hence most papers of local interest, and many specialized ones, are normally omitted. Major studies of single species are included, and mention is made of new species, but not of new subspecies. In practice about a fifth of each year's ornithological papers are mentioned. Papers appearing in the ‘Ibis’ itself are not abstracted, but are listed by title so that important papers are not omitted . Titles of papers in languages other than French, German, Italian and Spanish are translated and placed in square brackets. When there is an English summary with a title, this is used, but in round brackets .
