SUMMARY1 The development of the brood patch and other aspects of reproduction in domesticated canaries was assessed. Suboptimal breeding conditions ensured a considerable spread in the speed of reproductive development, and thus permitted an examination of the extent to which different aspects of development were related. 2 Loss of feathers is closely related to nest‐building, but not to egg‐laying. 3 Vascularization usually starts while defeathering is in progress. 4 Moderate vascularization (stage 3) occurs somewhat before egg‐laying, but only in birds which subsequently incubate. 5 Oedema occurs only in birds which incubate, and is closely correlated in time with egg‐laying. 6 Vascularity and oedema disappear a few days after the eggs are removed from an incubating bird. 7 The relationship of these findings to present knowledge of the hormonal control of reproductive development is indicated briefly.
