Summary.1 Drive concepts are used to explain a number of different characteristics of behaviour. 2 The drive is usually regarded as an unanalysable unit. When it is used with reference to a number of different characteristics of behaviour, there is an implication that the latter all depend on one aspect of the underlying physiological mechanism. This is unlikely to be the case. 3 Even when used solely with reference to changes in responsiveness to a constant stimulus, unitary drive concepts have a limited usefulness. 4 There is no need to postulate a drive which “energises” behaviour.
