Summary.1 A brief account is given of the topography of Bear Island and of previous ornithological work. 2 Thirty‐three days were spent on the island, the greater part of which was covered during a census of the bird‐life. A short ecological account is given of the breeding birds. 3 The effect on the bird‐life of recent climatic trends in the arctic is discussed. 4 Evidence is given for non‐breeding in a number of species. 5 A systematic list of 28 species includes field notes.
