T hese notes are based on observations made, as opportunities occurred, between September 1940 and July 1941 in widely separated localities in East Africa. They are, for the most part, sketchy and incomplete, for continued field work at any locality was never possible owing to preoccupation with duties, sudden moves, and other inconveniences. As there seemed little hope of being able to consult books of reference for many months to come, these notes have been written up in the field, and indulgence is asked for any inaccuracies that have occurred as a result.
