I n the year 1819 His Imperial Majesty Alexander Pavlovich, Emperor of Russia, despatched an expedition to explore high southern latitudes, with the special object of proceeding as far as possible towards the South Pole. This expedition was led by Captain Thaddeus von Bellingshausen, who had under his command the corvette ‘Vostok’ and the sloop ‘Mirnyi’.
