Although so well known in South Africa, where the species was discovered more than a hundred years ago. and mainly because in that part of the continent the bird's tail is of plain, not spotted fan pattern, fulvicapilla has a stormy generic history, only reaching Cistieola finally through Sylvia, Drymoica, Camaroptera, Calamodyta and Dryodromas.
