A quantitative method for screening the effects of Lactobacillus spp. on an enterotoxigenic strain of Escherichia coli is described. The method determines the effects of the lactobacilli on the specific growth rate of the coliform while in associative culture, so that the lactobacilli may be differentiated on the basis of the extent of inhibition. The method is reproducible and is not operator dependent.
