A sulphated derivative of paramylon, a water‐insoluble (1–3)‐β‐D‐glucan from Euglena gracilis , inhibited the cytopathic effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV‐1) on cultured MT‐4 cells as efficiently as dextran sulphate. A computer‐assisted three‐dimensional graphing technique revealed that paramylon sulphate and 3′‐azido‐2′, 3′‐dideoxythymidine (AZT) synergistically inhibited HIV replication.
