A viscometric assay was used to assess the extracellular pectinolytic enzyme activity produced by Neocallimastix sp. LM1 during growth in a medium containing grass leaves as substrate. The highest activity was measured at pH 8.0, in the presence of CaCl 2 . This anaerobic fungus apparently produced an endo‐acting pectin lyase (EC 4.2.2.10), which was induced in the presence of pectin.
