Effect of different doses of citrinin, the secondary metabolite of Penicillium citrinum Thom, was investigated on Allium cepa root cells. A marked decrease in mitotic index was observed with the increased concentration of toxin. In controls the mitotic index was 16·2 which at a concentration of 400 ppb was reduced to the level of 4·7. Besides a decrease in mitotic index, several cytological abnormalities were also found, such as chromosome breakage, polyploidy, anaphase bridge, laggard, etc.
