An isolate of Obesumbacterium proteus biogroup 2 was found to possess a formate‐dependent nitrate and nitrite reductase system the activity of which was rapidly repressed upon exposure to oxygen. N‐nitrosation of dimethylamine at pH 7·8 was characteristic of an enzyme‐catalysed reaction and found to be dependent upon nitrite reductase activity.
