An agar overlay containing sheep erythrocytes and the supernatant fluid of a blood culture of Staphylococcus aureus , poured onto inoculated PALCAM agar plates, allows a reliable visual reading of haemolysis. The method gave up to 95% recovery of Listeria monocytogenes from raw food samples.
