When grown with maltose or starch as carbon source at 37°C, Bacillus licheniformis synthesized two α‐glucosidases which could be resolved by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. One of these enzymes preferentially hydrolysed p ‐nitrophenyl‐α‐D‐glucoside ( p NPG) and the other was inactive on p NPG but hydrolysed maltose (maltase). Only the maltase could be detected in induced cells grown at 50°C.
