Millipore total‐count samplers intended for monitoring process water were compared with the traditional pour plate technique. Counts obtained with the pour plate method were significantly higher ( P < 0.01) after 5 d incubation at both 20°C and 37°C. It is concluded that Millipore total‐count samplers cannot be relied upon to give a true estimate of the total viable count from a process water system.
