ABSTRACT. A model of a system for assessment and solution of patients' information problems has been developed. It is based on a survey of the literature and research on methods developed to satisfy patients' need for information during hospital stay. The system is a modified nursing process with built‐in collaboration and communication between medical and nursing staff. How the system functioned is reported as part II of this series.
