Type A and type B monoamine oxidase (MAO) activities were determined in mouse brain and in primary cultures of mouse astrocytes. Thirty‐one‐day‐old astrocyte cultures exhibited predominantly type A MAO activity. In cultures of the same age, treated with 0.25 mM dibutyryl cyclic AMP under the same culturing conditions, 30% type B MAO was expressed, although dibutyryl cyclic AMP up to 1 mM does not affect MAO activity in vitro. The specific activity of type B MAO increased significantly in older cultures, while type A MAO changed only slightly.
