— L‐Histidine inhibits the uptake of L‐DOPA by brain cortex or striatum slices in short‐term experiments, but increases it in long‐term experiments. The potentiation of the steady‐state accumulation of L‐DOPA by histidine is a result of the cis‐ and trans ‐effects of histidine on the transport of L‐DOPA at both sides of the cell membrane. The results demonstrate the importance of hetero‐exchange phenomena in determining the cellular level attained for a given amino acid at the steady‐state.
