C holesterol , an essential component of the central myelin sheath, is synthesized in large quantities during myelination in the central nervous system. However, in rat brain prior to and during the early stages of myelination desmosterol accumulates in significant amounts (F umagalli and P aoletti , 1963; K ritchevsky and H olmes , 1962)
