— —The synaptic vesicle fraction, M 2 , isolated from rat brain tissue contained acetylcholine, acetylcholine esterase activity, and gangliosides. The separation of M 2 into several subfractions showed that the enriched synaptic vesicle subfraction, M 2 A, contained acetylcholine, but little acetylcholine esterase and ganglioside. The membrane subfraction, M 2 B, was enriched in the enzyme and ganglioside. Calcium ions facilitated the removal of membrane material from the synaptic vesicle fraction. In addition, the acetylcholine esterase of the synaptic vesicle fractions, M 2 and M 2 A, frequently were activated by calcium ions as well as other cations.
