This article presents the results of a survey examining existing early childhood special education practices in Taiwan, the Republic of China. Descriptive data on personnel representing several disciplines currently providing early childhood services were gathered through a questionnaire survey of 134 programmes in Taiwan. The following characteristics of professionals and paraprofessionals (e.g. teaching assistants) in these early childhood intervention programmes were documented: title of job(s); years of experience; levels of education; receipt of specialised early intervention training; types of licence/credential/certification; and in‐service training opportunities. Further, programme information such as the following was collected: total number of all children; number of children with special educational needs; staff–child ratio for centre‐based programmes; type of service(s) provided by the programme or programme setting(s); and staff case load for home‐based programmes.
