Summary. Laparoscopy was performed in 70 women with ascites of unknown origin, and in 56 a visual diagnosis, aided by biopsy, was made. There was carcinoma in 32, tuberculosis in 20 and cirrhosis of the liver in four. No abnormality was seen in 14.
