Summary Forty‐two breech deliveries were monitored throughout labour. Serious asphyxia at birth occurred in 15 babies, in every case preceded by abnormalities in the fetal heart rate. Interpretation of the records implicated umbilical cord compression as the likely cause of asphyxia.
