Summary Serum copper concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy in 288 Nigerian women comprising 212 pregnant women, 44 non‐pregnant controls and 32 postpartum women. There was a small progressive increase in serum copper during the first two trimesters to values at the upper limits of those of the nonpregnant controls. Significant increases occurred during the last trimester and persisted until the fourteenth postpartum day when the serum copper had declined to the levels observed in the control group. Both the absolute increase in serum copper and the proportion of women with increases outside the normal range were smaller than those previously reported in non‐Nigerians.
