Summary Pre‐eclampsia consists of hypertension, proteinuria and oedema in varying degrees. Unless patients are seen early in pregnancy it is not always possible to exclude underlying essential hypertension or renal disease. Using the indocyanine green (ICG) retention test we have found that patients with definite pre‐eclampsia retain more dye than normal pregnant women or those known to have essential hypertension. It is suggested that the IGC retention test may be of value in the differential diagnosis of hypertension during pregnancy.
